When the grain has matured on the fields it is time for harvest and further preparation of the seeds
. Traditionally this was done using sickles or scythe, which was very time consuming and hard work, requiring many people. Harvesting also included superstitious acts, such as leaving the last grain on a field unharvested. The whole process of harvesting required the participation of many people, and usually was developed in a festive, even when hard-working, environment. Today, combine harvesters has replaced the need of manpower and large fields can be used for cultivation on farms with a single farmer.
