Cultural Landscapes Activities
Sowing is the distribution of seed on agriculture fields. However, the process of sowing starts with the preparation of the seedbed, by tilling and harrowing of the fields. Before the mechanisation of agriculture, this was done with the help of draught animals such as oxen and horses. Sowing was done by hand-throwing seeds on to the fields. In most parts of Europe the seeds were kept in a bag or apron, but regionally other sorts of containers were used such as baskets in different shapes. Today sowing and cultivation of the land is done by machines, which means that larger areas can be sown with the same sowing depth and seed density.
