European Cultural Landscapes

European Cultural landscapes are an essential part of our heritage and present lives.  Through their forms, features and history of use, they illuminate aspects of our origin and development.  The cultural landscapes of Europe are main contributors to the European biodiversity; they are a significant part of the European heritage and witnesses of the past and present relationship between man and his natural and built environment. As a cultural heritage cultural landscapes are both the visible and the invisible landscape with its knowledgebase, myths, beliefs and folkloristic traditions. The cultural landscapes transcend national boundaries and have formed us as Europeans.
European cultural landscapes are important and contribute to an understanding of our common European cultural history and diversity. More knowledge will enable the broad European public to read our landscapes in terms of cultural heritage. We want to raise awareness about the protection of cultural landscapes heritage and sustainable agricultural practices.
